Teach Me Web Hosting Essentials
Is
a Cheap Web Host Right for Me?
In the world of web hosting, decisions are
becoming more and more difficult. Inexperienced people
are getting taken advantage of, and even some of the more experienced
people are having trouble figuring out what’s going on all
around them. You, like many others, have no doubt searched
for a domain you could call your own. To get this domain you’re
going to need a web host. Thanks to our capitalist society,
there are more and more cheap web hosts popping up all over
the place. However, are any of these cheap web hosts good?
And if they are, are these cheap web hosts right for you?
The first thing you’re going to have to think about is how
much bandwidth you’re going to need. If your website requires
a lot of images, videos, and sounds, then you’re going to require
a lot of bandwidth. However, if your website is simpler, with
almost no sound or video, you’re not going to require nearly
as much. What happens if you exceed your monthly bandwidth
allotment? Your website gets shut down. Most cheap web hosts
don’t give you a lot of bandwidth, which is why they may not
be right for you. To start with, you should make a list of
all the things you’d like to have on your site. Look at that
list, and estimate the size of every file. Add that total up
– that’s how much bandwidth you need for one visitor. Next,
figure out how many visitors you’re going to have a day – guess
if you have to, but be sure to overestimate. Now multiply the
number of visitors by the total file size – that will equal
how much bandwidth you’ll need in one day. Now multiply that
number by thirty – that’s how much bandwidth you’re going to
need in a month. When looking at web hosts, see if any of the
one’s you had in mind give you that kind of bandwidth. If they
don’t, then it’s time to start looking for a new web host.
You might have to pay more, but your site won’t be shut down
due to exceeding bandwidth.
If you need multiple
domain names, than cheap web hosting
probably isn’t for you. The reason for this is that while many
offer you multiple domain names, a lot of the time these domains
all use the same bandwidth, and clearly this will make your
bandwidth deplete exceptionally quickly. If you’re planning
on having more than one website, cheap web hosting isn’t for
you.
Some cheap web hosts will be unable to provide the amount
of storage you need for your website, but most won’t. Generally
speaking, storage issues don’t come up that often, as most
web hosts are well equipped to deal with these issues.
If you’re running a business and you cannot afford for your
website to be down for any sustained length of time, then cheap
web hosting may not be for you. Sure it sounds promising to
only pay $10 a month, but what happens when your website goes
down for a week because of a server error, and they can’t fix
it right away? How much money do you think you lost in that
week your website wasn’t up? What about all the customers who
went to your website looking for a product, but were unable
to find it? Do you think they’re going to come back?
However, if you’re running a personal site, for example a
family photo album, then cheap web hosting may be right up
your alley. Sure, the server may go down for a bit, but it’s
not going to break you either way. It can be a small problem,
but it won’t do any long-term damage like it will to a business.
A lot of cheap web host users use shared servers. This means
that more than one website is hosted on that particular server.
This also means that even though your website may do nothing
wrong, the server can crash because of something someone working
on the other website did. If you don’t want to take any chances
on someone else’s incompetence, then you should avoid cheap
web hosting.
